The Kama Sutra is most famous today to most people as a collection of drawings of sexual positions that at times seem to defy the very limitations of the human body. While the Kama Sutra is indeed a sexual playbook of sorts, the emphasis is on the science and the art of sexuality rather than being a simple how-to manual.
The Kama Sutra is a classic work of literature that was written over 1,500 years ago by Maharshi Vatsyayana, who was a sage in India. The period during which the Kama Sutra was written occurred during the Gupta dynasty, which was a kind of renaissance in Indian history. The work was inspired by Indian scriptures that date even farther back in time, including the most sacred texts in Indian history, the Vedas.

The Kama Sutra provides a scientific framework for how to make love. Contained within the work are 64 different and unique was to make love. The art of eroticism contained within the Kama Sutra is known as Panchali. If a woman is capable of of becoming a master at all 64 sexual practices, she achieves the title "ganika," which roughly translates into courtesan.
